Toyota's First Redesigned 4Runner In 15 Years To Feature Hybrid Option

Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE:TM) has unveiled a new hybrid engine for its 2025 4Runner SUV, marking the vehicle’s first redesign in nearly 15 years.

What Happened: The 2025 4Runner will feature a hybrid engine for the first time, along with new high-end trims, “Platinum” and “Trailhunter,” CNBC reported on Tuesday. Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager, expressed his excitement about the new model, stating it “nicely rounds out our truck family.”

The 2025 4Runner is the last to be redesigned on Toyota’s global truck platform, which was first introduced with the Land Cruiser and Tundra in 2021. The pricing details of the new 4Runner will be disclosed closer to its on-sale date.

The 2025 4Runner will be available in nine models, including the new Trailhunter model with additional off-road styling and equipment, and the Platinum model offering more convenience and luxury features. The production of the new 4Runner is taking place at Toyota’s Tahara plant in Japan.

Why It Matters: The new hybrid engine in the 2025 4Runner is a significant step for Toyota, known for its fuel-efficient vehicles. This move comes after Toyota’s overhaul of Daihatsu Motor’s operational structure and its increased focus on hybrid vehicles. The 4Runner’s hybrid engine is expected to boost its fuel economy ratings, which will be released closer to the vehicle’s arrival in showrooms in the fall.
