Apple To Join Forces With LG For OLED Display In Future iPad Pro And Macbook

Author: Benzinga Neuro | October 24, 2023 08:47am

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and LG Display Co. Ltd. (NYSE:LPL) are rumored to introduce specialized OLED display materials in future iPad Pro and MacBook models.

What Happened: As reported by The Elec, Apple has joined forces with LG Display to integrate new OLED material sets into their upcoming devices. LG’s “RDE” OLED material set will be included in the 11 and 13-inch iPad Pro models, while the “RDG” OLED material set will feature in the next-generation MacBook set to launch in 2027.

The partnership aims to produce specialized applications for a range of industries. The OLED panels designed for future iPad Pro and MacBook models will feature a two-stack tandem structure, providing the same brightness levels as single-stack counterparts but with reduced power consumption and extended lifespan.

Historically, LG Display’s initial “RD” series material set was used universally across IT products and vehicles. However, the updated “RDE” and “RDG” sets will provide materials specifically tailored to meet the unique requirements of Apple’s future OLED devices.

Why It Matters: This partnership comes after the iPad’s decline, as it underperforms compared to Apple’s other major product categories. As reported earlier, the iPad experienced a slump in sales to its lowest level since the start of the pandemic in early 2020.

The decline in iPad sales is attributed to the company’s industry-wide softness and missteps, as noted by Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman. Tablet sales of all major manufacturers, including Samsung and Lenovo, have declined following a post-COVID-19 surge. Most consumers now use larger-screen phones, reducing the need for iPads.

This collaboration with LG, introducing specialized OLED materials, could boost the iPad’s sales and performance by offering a unique, high-quality user experience.
