SpaceX, Telesat Join Forces: Falcon 9 Rockets To Ferry Broadband Satellites 14 Times To Low-Earth Orbit

Canadian satellite operator Telesat Corporation (NASDAQ:TSAT) has entered into an agreement with Elon Musk‘s rocket manufacturing company SpaceX to deliver the Telesat Lightspeed constellation to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

What Happened: Under the agreement, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 will launch 14 times from California and Florida carrying 18 Telesat Light satellites each time to low-earth orbit.

The launch campaign will kickstart in 2026 and will enable Telesat to begin providing global service in late 2027, the company said in a statement. However, it did not elaborate on the financial details of the agreement.

"SpaceX has been a trusted and effective launch provider to Telesat on our geostationary satellite programs and I am delighted that they will be supporting us with their highly reliable Falcon 9 rocket to deploy the Telesat Lightspeed constellation, the most ambitious program in Telesat's 54-year history," Telesat CEO Dan Goldberg said.

Telesat Lightspeed network seeks to provide low-latency broadband connectivity to enterprise and government users, indirectly similar to SpaceX’s own Starlink internet network which aims to provide connectivity directly to customers.

Why It Matters: CEO Elon Musk has previously said that he doesn’t really think about competition but focuses on improving Starlink and its rockets. "If competitors succeed, that's great," Musk said.

"Building upon our successful launch partnership to date, we look forward to flying Telesat once again as they expand connectivity capabilities for their customers across the globe." SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell said about the new agreement.
