Apple May Soon Let You Recharge AirPods By Simply Attaching Them To An iPhone

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is working on full reverse wireless charging support for iPhones despite facing some engineering roadblocks.

What Happened: Apple was planning to introduce reverse wireless charging, also known as bilateral wireless charging, with iPhone 14 Pro but failed to do so because of unforeseeable engineering delays.

The company engineers are again pressing ahead with the development, reported 9To5Mac, citing sources familiar with the matter.

According to FCC filings, the iPhone 12 lineup included bilateral wireless charging hardware. However, the feature was inactive.

The feature has been in the works since at least the iPhone 11 lineup, launched in 2019. It has proven to be a significant challenge considering the concerns surrounding heat management and charging speeds, said sources familiar with the development.

Why It's Important: The bilateral wireless charging is a cutting-edge technology that would enable users to recharge their iPhones with a wireless charger along with allowing them to use their smartphones to recharge an accessory such as an Airpod, the report noted.

Once this feature is introduced, Apple users could charge their AirPods by simply placing them on the back of their iPhones.

Apart from the reverse wireless charging feature, Apple is also expected to comply with the EU mandate dictating new electronic devices to must-have USB-C ports from next year.

While Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Greg Joswiak, said that the company would comply with the mandate, prominent tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee said the tech giant might find a workaround solution.
